Steve Jobs – in 1997 took back control over Apple (AAPL) which we know now was days away from bankruptcy at that time with Gil Amelio at the Helm.

A colleague reminded me of the following passage from Walter Isaacson’s Jobs’ biography about how Steve Jobs got Bill Gates to save the company with a $150 million investment – this is Jobs speaking:

I called up Bill and said, “I’m going to turn this thing around.” Bill always had a soft spot for Apple. We got him into the application software business. The first Microsoft apps were Excel and Word for the Mac. So I called him and said, “I need help.” Microsoft was walking over Apple’s patents. I said, “If we kept up our lawsuits, a few years from now we could win a billion-dollar patent suit. You know it, and I know it. But Apple’s not going to survive that long if we’re at war. I know that. So let’s figure out how to settle this right away. All I need is a commitment that Microsoft will keep developing for the Mac and an investment by Microsoft in Apple so it has a stake in our success.

Apple wants students to stop lugging around backpacks full of heavy textbooks and to switch to the iPad instead.

On Thursday the company introduced three free pieces of software revolving around education. It released iBooks 2, a new version of its electronic bookstore, where students can now download textbooks; iBooks Author, a Macintosh program for creating textbooks and other books; and iTunes U, an app for instructors to create digital curriculums and share course materials with students.

Digital textbooks made for iBooks can display interactive diagrams, audio and video. The iBooks Author app includes templates made by Apple, which publishers and authors can customize to suit their content.

An eerily lifelike Steve Jobs doll will not be sold because of “immense pressure” from Apple Inc.’s lawyers and requests from the late chief executive’s family, according to In Icons, the company that had advertised the action figure.

“We understand that this decision will cause many of the fans’ disappointment, but please forgive us as there is no other alternative unless to have the blessing from Steve Jobs family,” the company said in a statement on its website.
